For the second consecutive
year, the Elwood-John Glenn Knights have finished
the regular season with an 8-0 record having
defeated the South Hampton Mariners 40-6. Under
Coach Dave Shanahan the Knights have won eighteen of
their last nineteen games, the only blemish being a
loss in last year’s
County
Championship game to the
perennial power, the Babylon Panthers. This year
too, the pigskin prognosticators are picking the
Panthers to repeat as County Champions even if the
Knights manage to clear the playoff hurdles leading
to the Championship Game at SUNY Stonybrook.
The Knights’ victory over the
Mariners was a full team production. Leading the
scoring effort, the Mighty Demon, Jack Moorehead,
had two touchdowns including a sixty yard kick-off
return. Pat (the “Speedster”) Pascal had an even
longer run to the house, intercepting a Mariner pass
on the Knights’ own two yard line and returning the
ball ninety eight yards for a touch down. Austin
(“Crazy Legs”) had two first half touchdowns and
Reyes Gueverra had two field goals over thirty yards
plus two extra points as this game was over early.
In addition to a potent
offensive display, the Knights were dominant and
opportunistic on defense. John (“Latke”) McDermott
flattened several Mariner runners with jarring
tackles. Joe (“Mr. President”) Gannon had an
interception and recovered a Mariner fumble of a
Knights’ first quarter kick-off. In an unusual
twist, however, linebacker Matt Forsberg left the
field with a clean jersey. The only explanation, the
game was played on turf.
The next stop on the Knight
