KNIGHTS TOP
MT. SINAI MUSTANGS
ELWOOD, NY - On a
wet and windy day, the Mt. Sinai Mustangs came to the Elwood-John Glenn
Academic and Athletic Campus looking to derail a Knight
train rolling towards a second consecutive undefeated
regular season. The Mustangs took the lead on the
opening drive marching eighty yards with running backs
Murphy and Baldassare finding ample running room. To cap
the drive, Baldassare galloped in from the ten to open
the scoring with
Mt.
Sinai taking a 6-0 lead.
The Knights, however, came right back
and also scored on their first possession. Plus, when
the extra point snap went awry, the kicker, Reyes
Guevara picked up the loose ball, scrambled to his left,
and found Matt “Dirty Jersey” Forsberg in the end zone
for the two point conversion. Once the Knights had the
lead, they never trailed again, scoring two more
touchdowns before the half ended.
Mt.
Sinai hung tough, however,
and scored a second quarter touchdown too. At the half,
the Knights lead 15-13.
As Knight fans know, whatever success
the Knights may have depends on the performance of the
linemen. Throughout the day, the Knights offensive line,
with outstanding efforts by jolting juniors Tom Malloy
and Bryan Shankman, escorted the Knights runners deep
into the Mustang secondary. In the third quarter, with
the offensive line firing off the ball, both running
back Austin “Crazy Legs” Cohen and quarterback Ryan “Son
of Scowl” Rielly broke several long runs and each had
two touchdowns on the day. On both sides of the line,
Kyle Satchel played his standard strong game and, as
usual, John “Latke” McDermott unleashed some pancake
blocks and tackles.
Rielly also lead a successful aerial
attack, throwing for over ninety yards including a third
quarter touchdown toss to super-soph Nick Wagner. Of
course, Rielly also found the speedy Pat Pascal to help
move the ball but on this day, Pascal made himself best
known for ten jarring tackles. (Shades of the Mighty
Jack Moorehead!) As the Knights added another two
touchdowns in the fourth quarter while the Knights
defense stymied several
Mt. Sinai scoring attempts, the game lacked
for drama. The Knight simply executed Coach David
Shanahan’s fine game plan with methodical precision
while the Mustang’s suffered a rash of penalties to
either stall their offense or help the Knights sustain a
drive.
Next week, the Knights travel to South Hampton. Game time is scheduled for 1:30.
