KNIGHTS
FALLTO AMITYVILLE
Stony Brook, NY
- As everyone who has heard of Yogi Berra knows, it
isn’t over till it’s over. The Suffolk County D-IV
Championship proved this hoary cliché. Just when it
seemed that the Elwood-John H. Glenn Knights had the
win in hand with a nine point lead and four minutes
to play, Amityville struck twice to go ahead. Still,
the Knights responded, moved the ball downfield on
the game’s final possession, and the Championship
came down to a last second perfect pass to the
end-zone; where a receiver, a ball, and a streaking
defender converged. When the ball hit the ground,
the hard-earned and well-deserved title went to the
Amityville Warriors. The dramatic and great win for
the Warriors was heartbreak for the Knights who
suffered their only loss of a great season.
Both teams had only a few miscues and more
than their share of clutch performances. For
Amityville, star quarterback Gavin Kretz proved
deserving of his season-long accolades and sophomore
receiver Willie White announced to the football
cognoscenti that he bears careful attention and
recruiting. Also, the Amityville Warrior Wall is no
myth. It takes courage to run into that fortress of
hard tacklers who fight off blocks and the Knights
lauded running back, Austin Cohen, showed how a
senior team co-captain performs. The Knight defense
too, with senior
inside linebackers and co-captains--the Mighty Jack
Moorehead and Matt “Dirty Jersey” Forsberg--set the
tone early. The Knights tackle hard and punish ball
carriers.
Kudos to Amity and keep the Long Island Championship
in
Suffolk
County
where it belongs.
