The
Spartans to take next step this year
by Jon
Campolettano
(8/1) Last season Elmont reached the semi-finals of
the Nassau County Championship, before losing to the
eventual champs Lawrence. That Spartan team was a young
and inexperienced team, that snuck up on teams a times.
This year the Spartans will be one of the teams to beat
in the conference, with the bulls eye squarely on their
back.
Coach Jay Hegi is excited
about this year's team and he has every right to be.
Coach Hegi's team will be lead by two returning
All-County players in senior running back Justin Meyers
and junior quarterback DaShawn Miller. Meyers
burst onto the scene last season with 1028 yards rushing
and 9 touchdowns. Miller supplied a steady hand and 9
rushing touchdowns last season, his first year of
varsity football.
Coach will also rely on senior
James Myers (WR/S), senior Brian Cole (FB/ILB),
senior the 6'3" 255 Nikita Josephs (TE/DE) and senior
Kadeem Smith (WR/DB).
The schedule stack up in
Elmont's favor with the Spartans hosting both Carey and
Garden City at home, where Coach Hegi's teams are very
tough to beat with a 9-4 record over the last three
seasons. The Spartans have ended the season at 5-4 over
that same and this could be the year that they finally
get over the hump. With Meyers and Miller leading the
way anything could be possible.
