Recap: Sayville versus Islip

The Game at A Glance: Even though the score doesn’t indicate it (35-14) this was a really good football game between two schools separated by only 7 miles. The score was 14-14 at the end of the half that came on all big plays. The game remained that way until Sayville got a break on an Islip penalty and eventually won by a score of 35-14. I’m sure these teams will meet again in the playoffs.

First Half Highlights:
With 1:49 to go in the 1st quarter Sayville scored on a screen pass from Ferreira to Sirico. In the second quarter it was all about the big play as Islip scored  on a huge run by Sabbatino and a big pass play from Sabbatino to Hannon. Sayville scored on a drive culminated with a score by Haggart. Score at the end of the half Sayville 14 Islip 14

Second Half Highlights: With the score still 14-14 midway through the 3rd quarter Sayville was facing a 3rd down play and did not get first down, however Islip got hit with an illegal participation penalty which kept the drive going. On 3rd and 20 Haggart had the ball stripped from his hands, however he got the ball back and hit Hannon for a 68 yard TD which turned the game towards Sayville and gave them a big lift. Early in the 4th quarter Haggart broke free on a 48 yard run that Islip just couldn’t bounce back from. The final score was Sayville 35 Islip 14.

Play Of The Game:
There are 2 plays of the game; the penalty by Islip on 3rd down and the broken play in which Ferreira hit Hannon on a 68 TD pass

Game Balls: Sayville’s stars were Ferreira, Haggart, Hannon and defense. Islip’s stars were Sabbatino, Maher & defense

Audibles: Coaches’ Hoss (Sayville) and Lynch (Islip) rivalry go back to their playing days. One thing I must say, they’re competitive but without a doubt the way their teams play you know they respect each other’s program.

There are many seniors on both teams who I would expect to play football in college and they are; Ferreira, Hannon, Rupp & Ali (Sayville) Sabbatino & Connor (Islip) Maher has already committed to play Lacrosse at Binghamton.
